A charming 18th century landscape painting depicting travellers crossing a wooden bridge, pointing at a menacing grey cloud forming in the sky above. The style is reminiscent of artists working in the manner of Nicolaes Berchem or the broader school of Italianate or Northern European landscape painting. A gentleman in a red coat pauses to rest whilst the other pair continue on their way with a dog in tow. The painting is beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with floral and acanthus ornamentation. Inscribed lower left 'Kl: inu: 1769', possibly the artist's initials. On panel.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. A light, even patina of age is present across the artwork. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. The frame has a fine patina of age. Various repairs are noted to the frame moulding/running pattern. There is a loss to the swept rail (lower left). Overall, the artwork presents in good condition for its age.
