Frederick Golden Short (1863-1936) - A Pair of Oils Forest Scenes

Description

A pair of forest landscapes, possibly in the New Forest which the artist frequently painted. One features a river to the left of the composition. One of the paintings is signed on the verso. On board. The signed painting of a tree beside water measures 20.7 x 13.1cm, and the other measures 20.9 x 13.1cm.

Condition

Both have some mild marks, surface dirt, and some typical wear around the edges. Overall in good condition.

Artist Biography

Frederick Golden Short (1863-1936) was a painter born in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, the son of a local chemist. Showing an inclination towards art, he was sent to Southampton School of Art, to study painting. Although he travelled to the Mediterranean, Devon, Cornwall and in the north of England he returned to the New Forest where he did much of his work. A member of the Southampton Art Society, he was on the committee and a constant exhibitor for many years, occasionally sending paintings to the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, New Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Arthur Tooth and Sons. Golden Short gave lessons in painting and as an accomplished musician also instructed on the cello. For many years he was an organist at his local Baptist Church. The original drawings illustrating 'Autumn Leaves, a publication on the New Forest, were by Golden Short and were reproduced in the London Illustrated News of December 1881. Examples of his work are in the collections of Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Southampton Art Gallery, and Stockport Heritage Services.
