Artist Biography
Frederick Austin was a British printmaker and painter, born in Leicester and younger brother of the artist Robert Sargent Austin. He studied at Leicester School of Art before continuing at the Royal College of Art from 1924 to 1927, where he was taught by Malcolm Osborne, Randolph Schwabe, and Sir William Rothenstein. In 1927, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome for engraving, following in the footsteps of his brother, who had won the same honour five years earlier. Austin exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (RE), regularly showing work both in the UK and internationally. His finely crafted prints, often rich in religious and medieval themes, are held in major public collections including the British Museum, the V&A, and the Ashmolean. Though originally from Leicester, he spent much of his professional life based in London.
