Description

An etching with plate tone depicting a slum in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. Presented glazed in a cream and black double mount and a black frame. Inscribed with the title and signed and dated in plate to the lower-right edge. Also inscribed with the title in graphite to the lower-left edge and signed and dated in graphite to the lower-right edge. The original date of the plate is 1915 and the date of this impression is 1919.

Condition

There is some slight discolouration and small marks to the frame. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

Frederick Cecil Jones RBA (1891-1956) was a painter, etcher and teacher. He was born in Bradford. He studied at Bradford College of Art, 1915-16 and part-time at Leeds College of Art, 1930-35. In 1916 Fred joined the army where he served as a reconnaissance artist and gained the nickname 'Detail Jones' for the quality and precision of his work. He briefly taught other military artists the skill of panoramic reconnaissance drawing, but served most of his time on the Western Front until the close of the war. Jones exhibited at the Society of Yorkshire Artists, RA, RSA, RBA, RWS, and in northern provincial galleries. Elected RBA in 1940, a memorial exhibition of his work was held at Bradford, 1956 and at Keighley, 1957. He taught, with his wife, at Pudsey School of Art and his work is held by the Tate Gallery as well as in Bradford Art Gallery and Huddersfield Art Gallery. He was a member of the Bradford Arts Club.
