Artist Biography
Nicol Laidlaw was a painter of portraits and landscapes born in Leith, Midlothian the son of a clerk. The 1911 census records him living with an architect uncle William C. Laidlaw in the Corstorphine area of Edinburgh. Laidlaw studied at Edinburgh College of Art and in Paris and Spain and later became a portrait painter, illustrator and printmaker.
He exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Examples of his work are in the collections of the City Arts Centre, Edinburgh, Hawick Museum and National Trust for Scotland.
