A former Merchant seaman and Wearside shipyard draughtsman, Atkinson gave up his job in the drawing office of Darlington engineering company Whessoe to pursue his lifelong love of art. He attended art college in Hartlepool and went on to become a successful freelance artist, having a studio in Elvet Bridge, Durham.
