A fine watercolour painting with gouache details by the well-listed artist Frank Saltfleet. The scene depicts a street view with figures by a fountain in the Italian town of San Gimignano. Signed to the lower right-hand corner. Title inscribed to the lower margin. Title, artist's name and date are also inscribed on the mount. Presented in a washline card mount and in a speckled gilt effect frame. On watercolour paper .

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor foxing. Some foxing and discolouration to the mount. Small scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Frank Saltfleet (1860-1937) was born in Sheffield and was mainly known for his seascapes. Saltfleet was a protégé of John Ruskin, exhibiting in London at the FAS as a solo artist in 1900. Saltfleet went on to study at the Antwerp Academy of Art and afterwards travelled around Europe painting the landscape as he went. He taught Harry Epworth Allen and was a member of and President of the Sheffield Society of Artists. After returning to Sheffield after his travels, he was elected member of the Sheffield Society of Artists and was made President, 1894-95. During World War I, Saltfleet entertained the troops with a ventriloquist act. Museums in Sheffield, have examples of his work.
