A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Minor abrasions to the upper third of the composition. The frame has minor surface wear, including small scuffs and discolouration to the canvas slip. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.

Painter, illustrator and printmaker, born in Bayswater, London. He studied art at the Slade School, where he won the first medal for life drawing, and at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1896 he first exhibited at the RA, Walker Art Gallery, MAFA, NEAC, ISSPG and he also showed at the Paris Salon. He travelled extensively in Europe, South Africa and Ceylon. Between 1918-30 he taught etching at Central School of Arts & Craft. He wrote several books on artists including Charles Keene, William Roxby Beverley, Edward Duncan and William Callow. Many of his paintings were reproduced as picture postcards by Raphael Tuck and others. Emanuel also wrote for the Architectural Review, being particularly interested in interiors and was an Examiner for the Royal Drawing Society. He was also a member of the Art Workers' Guild and the Society of Marine Artists. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Ashmolean, Guildhall Library, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, IWM, National Museums Liverpool, Portsmouth Art Gallery, Tate Gallery, V&A, Brisbane Art Gallery, Tel Aviv Art Gallery and Johannesburg Museum.
