Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910) - 1877 Etching The Complete Angler

Description

A charming late 19th Century etching, showing a figure, crouched at the bank of a river, angling for fish. The artist has signed and dated in plate to the lower right. This is in its first and only state. The original plate lines are intact. Attractively presented with a green mount in a Hogarth style frame. There are two labels at the reverse, one with the artist's brief biography and the other with the history of the etching. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Artist Biography

Printmaker who was the brother-in-law of Whistler. He was educated at University College, London and also studied at the Sorbonne, Paris, where he took his degree in 1840. He was admitted as a member of the College of Surgeons in London in 1842 having qualified as a doctor. Self-taught as an artist, Haden's best work was executed in the early 1860’s, shortly prior to which Haden and Whistler lived together, working jointly on an unfulfilled project of etchings of the Thames. Haden also spent some time in Ireland, in Co. Tipperary, and works produced there have been rated as some of the finest landscape etchings of the nineteenth century. He was a founding member Society of Mezzotint Engravers and President of the RE, and also pursued a career as an eminent physician, attending, among others, Queen Victoria. Haden's etchings are represented in the collections of the V&A, Tate Gallery and the British Museum. He was knighted in 1894.
