This fine oil landscape by the well-listed artist Francis E. Jamieson, depict a highland mountain scene with a calming river, cottage, and shepherd making his way along the valley with his flock of Scottish Blackface sheep. The painting is signed to the lower right-hand corner. Well presented in a ornate gilt frame with scrolling acanthus mouldings. Signed verso. Unvarnished.
On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and fragments of paint loss across the surface. Areas of restoration include two small canvas repairs to the reverse, as well as a small amount of overpainting to the top half of the composition. A surface crack has formed across the front of the painting caused by the stretcher bars beneath. Signs of wear and tear to the gilt frame include several moulding repairs and stable cracking in places.

Francis E. Jamieson (1895-1950) was commonly known for his Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. The artist often signed with pseudonyms such as 'Phil Hips', 'Graham Williams', 'W. Richards' and 'Arnold Pienne', in order to reach a wider audience, whilst also selling his work ‘door to door’. Jamieson’s work was often in a traditional Victorian style and his pictures were reproduced as postcards by Ajelli and Co of London in the 1920’s.
