The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and very light foxing, otherwise in good condition. Minor scuffs to the frame.

Frances E. Nesbitt (c.1864-1934) was a painter, mainly in watercolours, born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. After training at the Slade School of Art, she began to exhibit at the Ipswich Fine Art Club and also at the RBA, NG, RA, RHA, RI, ROI, Dudley Gallery Art Society, Walker Art Gallery and at the SWA who elected her an Associate in 1899. Nearly every year with her widowed mother, she travelled abroad, visiting France, Germany, Italy, Norway and the Netherlands, studying the history and architecture of these countries. An excellent linguist, she took the opportunity to capture the local colour and atmosphere in her numerous watercolours. Venturing further afield, the pair visited North Africa. This trip resulted in Frances' travel book 'Algiers and Tunis' illustrated with many of her watercolours. Sadly her second book, 'Palestine' was never published. She died unmarried at Bovingdon, Hertfordshire.
