Description

An impressive 19th Century oil painting depicting a young girl leading a blind man through a Victorian street scene. The artist's delicate brush work and muted colour palette displays a clear proficiency for the oil medium. Scenes with a strong narrative were a popular throughout the 19th century, when literature began to have an increasingly important impact on the visual arts. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame and slip with leaf and berry detailing. Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

There is craquelure and substantial paint loss to the lower edge which has been retouched. With minor surface scratches and a large loss to the lower left edge of the frame which has been filled and retouched, as shown.
