Description

A charming oil painting depicting a bustling European street, with buildings lining the route towards a prominent town church. The composition guides the viewer's gaze from an animated group of townspeople gathered in the foreground along the cobbled street towards a crowd assembled at the church doors. This genre painting has been executed in a realistic style and is beautifully presented in a large gilt-effect frame with acanthus, laurel and berry running patterns. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some marks and light soiling to the surface of the painting. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of overpainting. The canvas has been relined to the reverse. Light scuffs to the perimeter of the painting, caused by the frame. Noted wear to the gilt effect frame, to include chips at all four corners and rubbing to the internal window. The overall condition of the artwork is good.
