Description
This 19th century genre scene depicts a travelling family at rest in a rural landscape. A figure, likely the father, plays the fiddle while a meal cooks over an open fire, suggesting a moment of respite during a journey. The subjects appear to be itinerant labourers or peasantry, possibly travelling in search of seasonal work. The detailed, observational brushwork and subject matter point to a European, possibly German or Central European origin, consistent with the academic realist tradition in which scenes of rural working class life were treated with both documentary interest and quiet sentiment. Presented in a wood frame with gilt detail. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some craquelure to the surface. Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
