An accomplished 17th-century English School portrait most likely to be of the influential Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn (1644-1718). Son of the admiral and politician Sir William Penn (1621-1670). Presented in a magnificent 17th-century style oak frame with outset corners. Unsigned but bears the inscription: 'This original portrait of William Penn was given to Nicholas Albright who left it to his nephew John Albright, who left it to his nephew William A. Albright' on the remnants of an old label verso. (Provenance: Albright family of Charlbury). On canvas.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some light scuffs and craquelure to the surface of the painting. Inspection under UV light reveals previous restoration. The canvas has been fully relined to the reverse, and there is some light overpainting to the portrait. The wooden frame is in very good condition, with only a small repair to the lower left corner moulding. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
