The gentleman appears charismatic and eminent, wearing long scarlet and purple robes and carrying a rounded black hat, the full-dress robes of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) of the University of London. Beside him is a wooden desk with a pile of books, symbolic of an academic setting.
Well-presented in a gilt wooden frame with inner running moulded pattern and outer plain cove, as shown.
Unsigned and inscribed. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age. Light discolouration and some very minor areas of abrasion. There is significant but stable craquelure across the surface of the work, likely caused by irregular surface tension in the materials. The frame has some light wear to the corners but is in very good condition overall.
