An early 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman set against a dark background. The white of the gentleman's cravat and the warm flesh tones of his hand and face bring depth and detail to the sitter's complexion and attire. The painting is presented in an ornate gilt frame with elaborate Rococo-style decoration, finished with scrolling acanthus leaves and shell motifs at the corners. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been previously relined. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips, scuffs, and stable cracking. The overall condition of the portrait is good.
