Description
A fine early 19th-century genre scene depicting a dimly lit cottage interior, in which a husband and wife are enjoying an evening meal and a tipple, the man's glass raised in a toast to some exciting news. A cool shaft of daylight falls through the shuttered window on the left, catching the pale pewterware on the table. The artist has paid close attention to every detail of the domestic scene, with daylight and firelight adding depth and shadow. Well presented in an ornate gilt-effect frame, the work is unsigned. On panel.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age including minor surface marks and abrasions throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. The frame has light surface wear. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
