This fine French oil captures a young child in a white dress standing in a romantic pastoral landscape, holding a small basket of fruit. The sitter's fair complexion, golden locks, and pleated dress make for a compelling and pure early 19th-century portrait. Beautifully presented in an antique empire frame, finished with a decorative lamb's tongue running pattern and palmette cove. Unsigned. Inscribed verso 'L'enfant en âge de deux ans'. On panel.
Condition
Fine craquelure to the surface of the painted panel. Inspection under UV light reveals minor overpainting to the lower edge of the portrait. There is a small dent in the panel to the upper left-hand corner. Small chips and light wear visible to the Empire frame.
