A very fine Austrian school showing Baron von Hùhch, his wife and General Farquharson as inscribed on the reverse. Commissioned watercolour paintings were popular amongst the upper classes, throughout the 19th Century, displaying their military status and wealth.
The artist has achieved an impressive level of detail to the sitter's facial features. The delicate brushstrokes perfectly capture the men's imposing expressions while they battle it out over a game of chess, their wives looking on. The classical architectural features in the background conjure an imposing and dramatic scene. It is possible this piece has further allegorical meaning, the wives hover ghost-like, the bride and widow perhaps symbolising the fate of their husbands. Well presented in a card mount and simple gold painted frame. Unsigned. On watercolour paper.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.
