Description

An evocative Romantic scene depicting a young man seated upon a tombstone, an open book resting on his knee as he gazes thoughtfully at a grave. The work draws inspiration from the Graveyard School - such as Thomas Gray's 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard' or Robert Blair's 'The Grave' - whose melancholic meditations on mortality formed a precursor to the Romantic movement. In the distance, dusk settles over the mountains, invoking the Sublime. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas laid to panel.

Condition

Discolouration and areas of craquelure. The canvas has been laid to panel. Light wear to the frame.
