A fine 19th-century Victorian mourning portrait executed in oil. The female sitter, captured in a three-quarter-length pose, wears a plain dark dress and white bonnet, with mourning rings adorning her fingers and a mourning brooch at her chest. She holds a prayer book in one hand and a handkerchief for her tears in the other. Presented in a contemporary gilt-effect frame with a beaded running pattern. Unsigned. On canvas laid to board.
Condition
The painting has undergone previous restoration. The canvas has been laid down to board. There is fine craquelure throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals minor overpainting to the background. A historic tear in the canvas has been repaired to the upper left hand quadrant. Light wear noted to the gilt effect frame. The overall condition of the portrait is very good.
