A lovely example of a 19th century oil on copper painting depicting the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. A grief-stricken group surrounds the sleeping Virgin, the figures displaying varied emotions of weeping, prayer, and tender concern. The painting style suggests it may be a copy after an earlier Italian Baroque master. Set within a hessian mat and tarnished gilt frame, the painting is unsigned. On copper plate.
Condition
Light soiling and minor abrasions to the surface of the painting. Light wear to the edges of the frame. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
