Framed 19th Century Oil - Crossing Under Moonlight
Description
A fine 19th-century oil depicting a moonlit estuary with a ruined tower silhouetted against a luminous night sky. Three figures navigate a small rowing boat in the foreground, picked out by the light reflecting off the water's surface. The composition employs dramatic chiaroscuro, contrasting the deep shadows of the architectural ruin with silvery moonlight breaking through turbulent clouds, creating a romantic and mysterious ambience. The painting is housed in an antique gilt Rococo Revival frame with ornate shell and acanthus mouldings. Illegibly signed lower left. On panel.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Light surface discolouration throughout, including yellowing to the varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals minor areas of overpainting along the top edge of the panel. The frame has moderate wear, including various repairs to the ornate mouldings/running patterns (particularly noted in the top left and lower right-hand corners). Small chips and stable cracking. The frame has a fine patina of age. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition.
