Description

A beautiful 18th century religious portrait depicting Saint John the Baptist in a pastoral landscape. The saint is recognisable by his symbolic attributes and the inscription 'ECCE AGNUS DEI' (Behold the Lamb of God) on his staff. Saint John has been captured seated on a rock with a lamb, symbolizing Jesus Christ, whom John refers to as the 'Lamb of God'. The painting is well presented in a simple gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

The condition is typical for a painting of this age including light dirtying to the surface and discolouration to the varnish layer. Areas of craquelure and abrasions throughout the portrait. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of overpainting. The canvas has been relined. Minor wear to the frame. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
