Description

A fine and delicately painted genre scene depicting three musicians in convivial company, two playing a fiddle and the other a lute, set within the warm interior of a tavern or inn. The composition is richly evocative of the Dutch and Flemish genre tradition, drawing on the great interior scenes of the 15th and 16th centuries - that familiar world of candlelit gatherings, humble pleasures, and ordinary life elevated to art. The palette is warm and earthy throughout, with tonal subtlety and a sensitivity of touch that speaks to an accomplished hand. The work is consistent with production from the latter half of the 18th century, when such retrospective genre subjects enjoyed renewed popularity among collectors and painters alike. Presented well in a complementary gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The canvas has been relined. There is some craquelure to the surface. Signs of wear consistent with age. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Minor marks to the frame.
