This vibrant early 19th-century gouache depicts the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, specifically the eruption of 1822. The painting shows the volcano violently spewing lava, with boats sailing in the water nearby. Unsigned. Inscribed and dated to the lower margin, behind the mount (please see photos). Beautifully presented in a birdseye maple wood frame. Purchased with another by the same hand. On paper.
Condition
Light discolouration to the paper, however overall the artwork is in good condition. Light wear to the frame, including scuffs and small chips to the edges.
