Description

An atmospheric interior study depicting an old woman peeling potatoes for supper. She sits in the corner of her cottage and a large pot boils on an open fire. A small cat perches on the chair beside her. Unsigned. On board.

Condition

There is some scuffing to the corners of the board. Very light surface marks. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

Artist Biography

Henry John Dobson was born in Peebleshire Scotland, he trained at the School of Design at the Royal Institution in Edinburgh. Works by Dobson have been regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and also at the Royal Academy, London. Primarily a genre painter, Dobson is known for his depiction of subjects from Scottish daily life, often with an emphasis on sentimental incidents. He also painted some fine watercolours and sensitive portraits. In 1911 he travelled to the United States and Canada. His two sons, Cowan Dobson and Henry Raeburn Dobson, also became artists.
