A very fine 19th century oil of an Italian landscape. The artist has depicted a tranquil river with fishing boat and figures fetching water. A large structure can be seen at the upper right with a circular tower. To the reverse of the canvas the name 'Bellotto' has been inscribed in graphite at the upper edge. This probably refers to the Italian landscape painter Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780), Bellotto's style was characterized by elaborate representation of architectural and natural vistas, and by the specific quality of each place's lighting. This particular composition displays these qualities, and the artist has a clear proficiency in the medium with an eye for detail and perspective.
Finely presented in a substantial carved dark wooden frame.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craqueleur. With some surface dirt. To the reverse of the canvas there have been four repairs to the canvas, all of which have been completed to a high standard. Inspection under UV light shows some very minor touches of overpainting used to repair the canvas tears. The frame appears to be in very good condition.
