A charming view of Kingston upon Thames by Florence E. Glasier (fl. 1866–1873), with swans and a boat on the water in the foreground and a church tower beyond. A label affixed to the reverse identifies the location, and is inscribed "Wanders the hoary Thames along his silver-winding way," a line from Thomas Gray's 'Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College'. The work is monogrammed and dated to the lower right, and is well presented in a maple veneer frame with a gilt slip. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Repaired tear to the upper left corner, and some losses to the paint. Scratches and scuffs to the frame. Overall, the artwork remains in good condition for its age and presents well.
