Artist Biography

Cartoonist, portrait and landscape painter, and illustrator, born in Botoşani, Romania, he came to England at the age of five. He studied at Manchester School of Art, 1907-15 in Italy on a travelling scholarship, and at the Slade School. During World War I, Ghilchik served first as a driver/mechanic in the British Army Service Corps and later in the Intelligence Corps in Italy. He had enrolled with Percy Bradshaw's Press Art School, and his contributions to Punch between the Wars were very much in the style of Lewis Baumer. He also drew for Humorist, Bystander, and the Daily Sketch. A founder member of SWE in 1920, he was also President of the London Sketch Club, vice-president of the United Society of Artists, a member of the Savage Club, and was elected ROI in 1960. His work is in the collections of Manchester City Art Gallery and Sheffield Art Gallery. He was married to the artist Josephine Ghilchik, whom he met while studying in Manchester. David Ghilchik exhibited at the RA, ROI, RBA, NEAC, RP and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
