Fine Original Late 19th Century Oil - British Ship at Sea
Description
A remarkably fine and meticulously detailed miniature oil on canvas, depicting a British ship at sea, with a distant coastline. The artist had a clear proficiency in the medium, with intricate brushwork and a layered palette, creating an atmospheric setting, remarkable for such a small aspect. A church tower or municipal building can just be seen in the distance through the fog, adding purposeful scale to the central ship. Flying a Union Jack and the Red Ensign, the vessel is likely to have been a three masted timber-hulled Merchant Navy ship.
Handsomely presented in a swept gilt wooden frame, with pronounced corner ornamentation and botanical mouldings, as shown.
Signed indistinctly, On canvas on stretchers.Condition
In fine condition overall, for a picture of this age. Inspection under UV light reveals some minor surface restoration. There is a small loss to the frame in the lower right corner.
