A very fine original early or mid 19th Century portrait in oil on panel, depicting Mrs Elspeth MacGillivray. The sitter is shown in a lace mob cap, characteristic of dress in the early 19th Century and often worn by matrons, as well as a large dark shawl. Looking straight ahead to the viewer, the artist has created both an interesting and arresting portrait in the style of the period. Fine brushwork and delicate facial form indicates the artist has a clear proficiency for portraiture. There is a record of an Elspeth MacGillivray of Clan Gillivray in Scotland, and this is likely to be the subject depicted.
Well-presented in an oval gilt wooden frame, with lamb's tongue running pattern and cross ribbon details, as shown. There is a label to the reverse reading 'Great Grandmother, Elspeth MacGillveray'.
Unsigned. On panel.In very good condition overall. There is some discolouration and yellowing to the varnish, expected for a picture of this age. There is also some trapped dirt behind the glazing. Inspection under UV light reveals a small fill to the upper left corner, near the edge. The frame has a minor repair to the lower edge, but is also in very good condition.
