Description

An accomplished scene by well listed artist and sculptor Frederick Thomas Callcott. It depicts a drunken gentleman slumped in his doorway at sunrise. Signed to the lower left. Well presented in an oak frame and gilt slip. On canvas.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the varnish.

Artist Biography

Frederick Thomas Callcott was a London-born sculptor who exhibited biblical, mythological and genre subjects at the Royal Academy between 1878 and 1921, as well as a number of portrait busts. His bronze group, Going to School, was shown at the RA in 1889, and again at the Paris Salon in 1898. Callcott was a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and exhibited also with the Dudley Gallery, Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New Gallery and Royal Society of British Artists.

His Memorial to the Surf Boat Disaster, consisting of a lifeboatman looking out to sea, cast by Elkington’s, was inaugurated on Marine Terrace, Margate in 1899. Between 1904 and his death Callcott contributed relief sculpture to H. Fuller Clark’s interior of the Black Friar public house in the City of London, with Nathaniel Hitch and Henry Poole contributing to its splendour. He was married to the sculptor Florence Newman and he died in Hastings, Sussex.
