A very fine original 19th Century portrait of a scholarly monk in oil on canvas. The sitter is turned slightly downwards, imparting a sense of religious deference in his stature. He is cloaked in traditional monks dress, grasping a book with his right hand. The artist has used a dark field and a muted palette, creating an evocative portrait in the traditional style.
The artist has captured the fine lines of the subject's expression, with delicate shading and understated form. The light chiaroscuro suits the figure well, alluding to a sense of holiness and piety.
Handsomely presented in a gilt wooden frame with ornate corner ornamentation, including strapwork and floral motifs. The inner gilt slip is concealed at the edge with foliate beading, as shown.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface craquelure. There are some creases to the canvas, along the edges of the stretchers behind. There is also a small canvas repair that has been professionally restored, and can be seen from the reverse, as shown. The frame has some small areas of restoration, and a loss to the moulding in the upper left corner. The appearance is fine overall.
