An extremely fine late 19th Century work in oil on canvas, depicting two male figures dressed in plain clothes, beside a gothic arch. The artist has composed the scene with meticulous and careful form. The figures hold a shovel and a pickaxe, suggestive of the gravedigging profession. A buttress and drainpipe can be seen, indicating they are just outside a church, with wooden boards typically used to support dug graves.
The artist has a clear proficiency in the medium, with a fine layered palette. The architectural geometry contrasts well with the natural and textured clothing of the figures. A subtle management of light and shadow completes this atmospheric and characterful work.
Handsomely presented in a period gilt wooden swept frame, with fine corner ornamentation, acanthus scrolling and lamb's tongue running pattern, as shown.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is craqueluree to the surface, and inspection under UV light reveals some areas of previous restoration. The frame also has some areas of restoration, as well as scuffing and marks.
