Fine British School 19th Century Oil - Boy with Terrier
Description
This refined 19th-century portrait, in the manner of Margaret Sarah Carpenter (1793-1872), portrays a rosy-cheeked boy accompanied by his terrier. The child, with fair hair and striking blue eyes, is dressed in a dark green jacket accented by a large white collar characteristic of the Romantic era. He holds his dog close, their cheeks gently touching in an affectionate pose. To the left, a rich red drape adds a sense of theatrical elegance and depth to the composition. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. There is some craquelure and light discolouration to the surface. The artwork has been previously restored, including lining and areas of overpainting. Overall the artwork is in very good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and stable cracking. Overall the frame also remains in very good condition.
