Description

This fine Italian portrait by the accomplished painter Ferdinando Cavalleri (1794-1865) depicts a lady in Rome, Italy, in the early 19th century. She wears a dark cloak against a warm, earthy background. The artist puts an emphasis on the rich textures in the composition, drawing the viewers ever closer to the paisley shawl captured in jewel tones and the feathered edges of the ornate lace bonnet. The sitter's gentle expression and the soft lighting contribute to the painting's intimate atmosphere. Signed and dated '1828' to the lower right. Inscribed 'Roma' below the signature. Condition

The painting is in very good condition for its age, and has undergone some restoration, with areas of overpainting to the surface. Light discolouration to the varnish. Minor marks consistent with age. There are also some areas of craquelure to the surface. The gilt frame has some light wear and a fine patina of age.

Artist Biography

Ferdinando Cavalleri was an accomplished Italian painter, specialising in historical subjects and portraiture of royalty and nobility, active in a Neoclassical style. He trained at the Academy of Turin and soon after moved to Rome, becoming an established portrait painter. In 1831 he became 'Painter of the Cabinet' to the King of Sardinia. Examples of his work can be found in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and the Palazzo Reale in Turin. His sitters included Maria Theresa of Austria, Queen of Piedmont, and Prince Eugene of Savoy.
