Feliks Topolski RA (1907–1989) was a Polish-born British expressionist painter and draughtsman. Born in Warsaw, he studied at the Warsaw Academy of Art and trained as an artillery officer. While still a student, he began to contribute cartoons to the Cyrulik Warszawski (The Polish Barber), and then gradually to other periodicals. A series of journeys across Europe, from 1933, informed both his political awareness and artistic style. Eventually, he moved to Britain in 1935 after being commissioned to record King George V's silver jubilee. He founded a studio near Waterloo Station, which later became an exhibition and then a café-bar featuring his art. He was associated with a group of writers that included Graham Greene and contributed illustrations to Night and Day, the short-lived magazine co-edited by Greene, and the newspaper the News Chronicle. George Bernard Shaw called Topolski’s work ‘perhaps the greatest of all impressionists in black and white’, and asked him to illustrate three of his plays: Geneva, In Good King Charles’s Golden Days and Pygmalion. During the Second World War, Topolski became an official war artist and painted scenes of the Battle of Britain and other battlefields. Feliks Topolski’s pencil and ink drawings were the first stage of his prolific Chronicles, which appeared fortnightly from 1953 to 1979. Since his death in 1989, Topolski’s Chronicles have retained respect as a pictorial and political record spanning nearly thirty years of world history. The Chronicles contain 3,000 drawings and were exhibited across the globe. In 1959, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, commissioned Topolski to create a mural depicting the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1989, he was elected a senior Royal Academician as a draughtsman. His work is represented in the collections of the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Tate, Topolski Century and the V&A; the Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie; and the Harry Ransom Research Center (University of Texas at Austin).
