Description

This vibrant still life painting exemplifies the bold characteristics of early Fauvism with its expressive use of colour and loose, energetic brushwork. The composition depicts a rich bowl of fruit – including oranges, apples, and bananas, arranged on a simple pedestal bowl. The artist has abandoned naturalistic colour in favour of emotional expression, using brilliant oranges, deep reds, acidic greens, and vivid blues that capture the eye. The brushstrokes are visible and confident, applied with a directness, and the fruit forms are simplified into essential shapes, outlined with dark contours. The painting's surface has a tactile quality, with the paint applied thickly in places, but also allowing the canvas texture to show through. The painting is monogrammed by the artist to the lower right and dated '27. On canvas.

Condition

The condition is very good for a picture of this age. There are no visible signs of restoration. Slight twisting to the old wooden canvas bars. There is a small canvas dent to the lower right-hand corner. There is a small surface scratch to the pedestal bowl near centre. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
