F. Volck - Exquisite 19th Century Watercolour Portrait of a Bearded Man

A beautifully and delicately painted portrait of a bearded gentleman. With dramatic chiaroscuro and exceptional detailing to the sitter's eyes and beard. Signed in the right edge. Well presented in a gilt frame with Greek key leaf and tongue and dart detailing, with a gilt slip. Signed.

Condition

Newly and professionally restored and now in excellent condition. Inspection under UV light reveals restoration to the man's hair and to the area above his head.

Collection Information

We are not able to attribute this painting to an artist with absolute certainty. However, we believe that a possible attribution would be to Ferdinand Volk, who also went by Ferdinand 'Volck'. Ferdinand Volk was a German artist, born Wurzburg 1772 - died Raciborz, Poland, 1829. He was a portrait artist and attended the Dresden Academy. His 'Portrait of a Man' has been held in the National Museum of Wroclaw (information gathered from 'Benezit Dictionary of Artists' Vol 14, 2006). Unfortunately we have not been able to find images of Ferdinand Volk's signature to compare with the signature on this portrait and we are not able to attribute this painting to Volk with certainty. This is a beautiful portrait and clearly painted by an incredibly skilled draughtsman.
