A finely painted 19th Century portrait in watercolour with scratched highlights. Although we know little of the artist's identity it is clear they had an impressive command of the medium. The skilful rendering of the woman's facial features has been achieved using an extremely fine brush and delicate layers of cross-hatching.
The young woman is dressed in the traditionally rural style, a sheaf of wheat slung across her waist. Gleaners or female farm hands became a popular subject towards the later half of the 19th century and has remained of interest to many artists up until the present day. Influential oil painting 'The Gleaners' by Jean-François Millet gave a sympathetic view of the French rural classes causing an uproar at the 1857 salon. Millet's poignant social commentary inspired a new generation of artists. This included Vincent Van Gogh and Pissarro Renoir whom both sought to challenge hierarchical class structures. This art historical legacy has been adopted most recently the filmmaker Agnes Varda. Her stunning documentary 'The Gleaners and I' interrogates the political nature of gleaning and relation to her own artistic production.

Signed with monogram. On wove.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. With some light foxing spots and surface scratches most notably to the sky area.
