Artist Biography

Eve Disher was a painter, born in London, who studied at Hornsey School of Art. During World War I she worked for the London Fire Service. After leaving home to marry the theatre critic Willson Disher she became friendly with members of the Bloomsbury Group. When her marriage broke up in the late 1920's Disher began a relationship with a member of John Grierson's General Post Office film unit and became involved in its work.

After the war she travelled widely, living in South Africa and Jamaica, paying her way by painting portraits. For many years she shared a studio with Vera Cunningham, whose work influenced her style. Disliking the smell of oil paint Eve Disher opted for gouache when working on commissions – which included a painting of Professor J. B. S. Haldane which is now in the National Portrait Gallery. She exhibited with the London Artists' Association, SWA, WIAC and at the Matthiesen Gallery. Later in her life she held a solo exhibition of her work at Foyle's Gallery, London in 1987. Examples of her work are in the collections of the Ashmolean, Oxford and in Ballarat Art Gallery, South Australia.
