A fine portrait of Nicholas Lanier (1588-1666) after Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). Lanier was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, performer, and the court musician and ‘Master of the King’s Music’ for Charles I and Charles II. Van Dyck's original depicts Lanier clad in expensive silks and a black cloak standing nonchalantly with his left hand resting on the hilt of his sword. It is now in the collection of the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna. Well presented in a dark frame with a gilt slip. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and overpainting. Overall the condition is good for a picture of this age. Discolouration and craquelure. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
