A fine European school portrait depicting a beautiful woman captured gazing away from the viewer, her face rendered with careful attention to light and shadow against a muted earth green background. The composition focuses closely on the sitter's striking complexion and facial features, as well as her attire, which is accented by a vibrant blue bow at the neckline and drop earrings that echo the colour of the lady's dark, swept-up hair. Presented in a plain gilt-effect frame. The portrait is indistinctly signed to the lower right. Dated 1871. On canvas.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Light surface discolouration throughout, including yellowing to the varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. Light bumps and undulation in the canvas. The portrait has been previously cut down and laid to board. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips and scuffs. Overall, the artwork presents in good condition.
