European School 18th Century Oil - The Winning Hand
Description
A charming 18th-century oil painting depicting a tavern interior, where a couple engage in a game of cards. The artist skilfully captures the soft evening light filtering through a nearby window, casting a warm glow across the scene and illuminating the lady in the foreground as she holds her cards close to her chest. In contrast, the gentleman sits in the shadows contemplating his next move. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in a gilt frame with delicate detailing. On panel.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration to the varnish, fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals restoration throughout, particularly to the female figure. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations throughout. The frame has undergone previous restoration, including repairs to the inner edge. The painting does not lie flush with the frame, resulting in small gaps below the rebate.
