An atmospheric 19th-century landscape painting depicting a shepherd resting beneath a tree whilst watching over a mixed flock of sheep, a donkey, and goats. A dramatic rocky outcrop anchors the left side, while a luminous valley and distant mountains recede into the background. Warm, golden light suffuses the evening sky. The painterly treatment of the sheep's wool, the loose handling of foliage, and the soft atmospheric perspective all suggest a competent artist at work. The painting is well presented in a stained wooden frame with gilt slip. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration and minor overpainting. The frame has light surface wear. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.
