Ethel Gray - Original Early 20th Century Watercolour. Signed with monogram. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.Ethel Gray was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1879. She studied art at York, Leeds and the Royal College of Art, London. She later became art mistress at York and Leeds Schools of Art and at the Leeds training college. She is known to have been living in Oxford in 1900 and Leeds in 1939. Between these dates, in 1926, she taught at the Forbes School in Newlyn, Cornwall and exhibited at the local gallery. The small fishing village of Newlyn had long been a haven for artists, producing the Newlyn School of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. The Forbes School of Art was an establishment set up by, and named after, one of the leading figures of the group, Stanhope Forbes, and his wife, Elizabeth.Size

From a collection of unframed watercolour studies by the artist, Ethel Gray (1879-1957) purchased in a studio sale. Most are monogrammed. The collection includes landscapes of the South West, particularly the Dorset coast near Corfe Castle.
