Artist Biography

William Henry Vernon was a typical Victorian journeyman painter who travelled widely in England as his paintings depict. He was a prolific artist exhibiting at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy and Royal Scottish Academy. He is believed to have exhibited over 200 and in 1884 he was elected an Associate of that Society. His death was recorded at his Handsworth home where he lived for most of his adult life. It should be noted that some authorities give the year of his birth as 1825. Examples of Vernon's paintings are in the collections of Wolverhampton Arts and Heritage, Dudley Art Gallery and the Herbert Art Gallery
