Description

An amusing mid-century watercolour by British artist Ethel Charlotte Hatch (1869-1975), depicting the square of Varallo in the northern province of Vercelli. Signed to the lower right. The architectural study has been well presented in a new card mount and rounded gilt frame. On fibrous paper.

Condition

There are several light scratches to the gilt frame. Otherwise in fine condition.

Artist Biography

Ethel Charlotte Hatch was born in Headington, Oxford, the daughter of a clergyman. She attended the Slade School studying under Henry Tonks, Philip Wilson Steer and Frederick Brown during in the 1890's. She was a member of the New English Art Club with whom she exhibited and she also exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, Goupil Gallery, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Society of Women Artists, and Walker's Gallery.

Hatch was elected a member of the Society of Women Artists in 1935. She lived in Oxford, Kensington, London, and for many years, in Italy. Her family were friends of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carrol) who photographed her as a child. 'Summer Flowers' a watercolour by Hatch was exhibited at the Macrae Gallery and reproduced in Drawing & Design, July 1921. She died in 1975, aged 105.
